
Cardinals Fall 76-65 At Cincinnati

Cincinnati, Ohio - The University of Louisville women's basketball team fell 76-65 to Cincinnati Saturday afternoon at Fifth Third Arena. Jazz Covington led all scorers with 19 points. Missy Taylor added 16 points and Angel McCoughtry finished with 12 points for the Cardinals. Micah Harvey led the Bearcats with 16 points and 10 assists.
Cincinnati used an early 7-0 run to go up 15-5 at the 14:30 mark of the first half. Louisville then went on a 7-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 15-12 with 10:39 left in the first half. Taylor hit a three-pointer to tie the score at 18 at the 7:10 mark. Covington's layup at the 5:49 mark gave the Cardinals their first lead of the game at 22-20. After missing the extra point Covington grabbed the rebound and Taylor nailed another trey to give Louisville a 25-20 lead at the 5:40 mark. Cincinnati then went on a 6-0 run to take a 26-25 lead with 3:14 left in the half. Covington's three point play gave the Cardinals a 28-26 lead while the Bearcats answered with a three-pointer to take a one point lead. McCoughtry scored on a layup to give the Cardinals a 30-29 lead at the break.
The Cardinals built a four point lead to start the second half. Then Cincinnati went on a 6-0 run to take a 39-36 lead at the 13:37 mark. McCoughtry tied the game at 42 with 11:45 remaining. The lead changed hands until a Michelle Jones converted a three point play with 10:35 left to play to give the Bearcats a 47-46 lead. Cincinnati built a six point lead but Covington's two foul shot got the Cardinals within two at the 7:45 mark. The Bearcats then went on a 6-0 run to take a 60-52 lead with 6:11 left to play. Louisville cut the lead back to four after a foul shot from McCoughtry with 4:21 remaining. Cincinnati's Treasure Humphries hit four foul shots to extend the Bearcats lead to eight with just over four minutes left to play.
Consecutive baskets by Covington and Taylor cut the lead to four with 3:15 left to play. Cincinnati then answered with six straight points, a three-pointer from Harvey and a three point play by Humphries to give UC a 70-60 lead. Both teams traded baskets until Helen Johnson hit the three-pointer with 1:30 left to play to get the Cards within seven. Cincinnati hit 4 of 4 from the line to seal the 76-65 win.
Louisville finished the game shooting 42.6 percent from the field while Cincinnati connected on 45.6 percent. Cincinnati hit 41.2 percent from behind the arc while the Cards hit just 20 percent. Cincinnati outrebounded the Cardinals 41-32.
Louisville will be back in action as they host South Florida Tuesday night in Freedom Hall at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised on CSTV as the BIG EAST Game of the Week.
