Volleyball to Face UConn in the BIG EAST First Round

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Louisville volleyball team will take on UConn on Friday at the BIG EAST Championship at 12:30 p.m. in Cincinnati's Fifth/Third Arena. The St John's Volleyball team captured the 2006 BIG EAST regular season title with a hard fought 3-2 win over Villanova in Queens, N.Y.to become the first league team to go undefeated since Notre Dame did in 2001. The Red Storm will enter the BIG EAST Championship as the No. 1 seed.
The single-elimination conference tournament will consist of the top eight teams based on records against league opponents. The event will be hosted by the University of Cincinnati at Fifth Third Arena on Nov. 17-19. The BIG EAST Championship final will be televised live on College Sports Television (CSTV) at 4:00 p.m. Nov. 19.
The winner of the tournament will earn the conference's automatic berth to the 64-team 2006 NCAA Division I Championship.
St. John's (29-1, 14-0) is slated to take on eighth-seeded USF (7-7, 12-15) in Match C at 3:30 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 17. The Bulls will make their first ever BIG EAST Volleyball Championship appearance.
Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Notre Dame and Marquette finished the regular season in a four-way tie for third place. By conference tie-breaking policies, Pittsburgh will enter the championship seeded third, Cincinnati fourth, Notre Dame fifth and Marquette sixth.
Pittsburgh (22-8, 10-4) will take on Marquette (15-12, 10-4) in Match A at 10:00 a.m. ET on Friday Nov. 17. No. 2 seed Louisville (20-6, 13-1) will take on No. 7 Connecticut (19-10, 8-6) in Match B at 12:30 p.m. ET on Friday.
The Huskies will make their first BIG EAST Championship appearance since 2002.
The winner of the Pittsburgh vs. Marquette match will play the winner of Louisville vs. Connecticut contest in the first conference semifinal at 1:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 18.
Cincinnati and Notre Dame will faceoff at 6 p.m. on Friday in the final match of the day.
The victor of the Notre Dame vs. Cincinnati contest will take on the winner of the St. John's vs. USF match in the second semifinal at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday Nov. 18.
Regular season awards, including BIG EAST Coach of the Year, Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Libero of the Year and all-conference teams will be announced at an awards banquet in Cincinnati on Thursday, Nov. 16.
