
No. 11 Field Hockey Tops Georgetown 5-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. - - Junior forward Missy Briery scored a pair of goals as the eleventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated host Georgetown 5-0 Friday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. The Cardinals improve to 11-6 (4-1 BIG EAST) while the Hoyas fall to 5-9 (0-5).
Louisville rattled of five shots and drew two corners to open the half. Georgetown goalkeeper Deirdre Crovo stopped Casey Diener's shot and Janelle Avila sent the ball into the right side of the cage to start the scoring at the 7:39 mark in the game. Later in the half, Diener tipped a penalty corner shot from Lisa Wasser at the 24:56 mark to give the Cards a 2-0 lead. The Cards took the 2-0 lead into halftime after outshooting the Hoyas 12-0 and holding a 5-0 penalty corner lead in the first half.
The Cards scored two quick goals in the second half to take a 4-0 lead in the game. Wasser sent a shot over Crovo to notch an unassisted goal at the 44:13. A minute later, Briery connected on a dish from Jessica Javelet. Briery capped the scoring with another Javelet assist at the 60:02 mark in the game.
U of L outshot Georgetown 11-2 in the second half and had a 7-2 penalty corner lead. Louisville's Marie-Claire Heller and Heather Bustanoby combined for the shutout with Bustanoby posting one save. Crovo registered four stops in the game. The Cardinals finished the game with a 23-2 lead in shots and a 12-2 penalty corner advantage.
Louisville will close BIG EAST play at Rutgers Sunday at 1 p.m. The Cardinals have already secured a spot in the four-team conference tournament which will be held November 4-5 at Louisville's Trager Stadium. Villanova and Providence have also punched their tickets with the only remaining spot to be decided between Connecticut and Syracuse.
