
No. 11 Field Hockey Defeats Rutgers 4-1

PISCATAWAY, NJ - - Junior Janelle Avila scored a goal and added a pair of assists as the eleventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated host Rutgers 4-1 Sunday afternoon at the Rutgers Stadium Complex. The Cardinals improve to 12-6 (5-1 BIG EAST) while Rutgers falls to 6-11 (1-5).
After a scoreless first half in which the Cards outshot the Scarlet Knights 11-2 and held a 6-2 penalty corner advantage, the Cards posted three goals in a three-minute span to open the second half.
Avila started the flurry of goals when connected on a pass from senior Jen Kastelic at the 38:47 mark in the game. Avila and Kastelic combined again less then a minute later. This time Avila dished to Kastelic to make the score 2-0. Junior Casey Diener capitalized on Avila's second assist of the game to give the Cards a 3-0 lead at the 41:18 mark.
Rutgers' Amy Lewis notched an unassisted goal with just under nine minutes remaining in the second half to put the Scarlet Knights on the board.
Senior Jessica Javelet, registered her team-leading 18th goal of the season with just 11 seconds to play for the 4-1 win. She has now had a goal or an assist in 11 straight games.
Louisville outshot Rutgers 23-9 and held a 10-2 lead in penalty corners in the game. In goal, junior Marie-Claire Heller posted five saves. Rutgers' starter Rosalyn Wentko had 11 stops in 58:08, while Leslie Kelly played the final 11:52 of the game.
U of L will honor seniors Lauren Groff, Carrie Jackson, Jessica Javelet, Sara Jerousek, Jen Kastelic, Andrea Roussel and Lisa Wasser when Iowa pays a visit to Trager Stadium on Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. The Cardinals will then prepare to host the 2006 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship which will be held Nov. 4-5 at Trager Stadium.
