
Volleyball Beats Xavier 3-1

Junior outside hitter Svetlana Dukule had 22 kills and five blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over visiting Xavier in collegiate volleyball action last night in Cardinal Arena.
The Cardinals boosted their record to 12-6 with the 30-25, 27-30, 30-28, 30-23 win. Xavier falls to 11-9. The Cardinals registered their widest blocking margin of the season when they outblocked the Musketeers 19.5 to5. The Cardinals outhit XU .254 to .216. Ten service errors, four blocking errors and 32 hitting errors did not help the XU cause.
"We had to change the lineup a little before the match because of an injury and then during the match because of an injury to Stephanie and then back again when we realized she was alright," said U of L coach Leonid Yelin. "We adjusted on the fly and it wasn't always pretty, but we held on even when we got behind a few times. We are coming together as a team. We do need to work on eliminating unforced errors."
U of L hit .355 and outblocked XU 4-0 in the first game's 30-25 win. U of L was led by Tatyana Kolesnikova's four kills. Down 12-9, U of L used a 6-1 run to retake the lead at 15-14 and never trailed again.
U of L's hitting cooled to .119 in the second set as the XU block came alive. The Musketeers had five blocks led by Jill Quayle's three. The Cards had their chances when they tied at 17 but XU answered with a 5-1 run to go up 22-18 and forced a U of L timeout. The Cards managed to tie at 22 but XU took advantage of four U of L errors and had two blocks of their own to take the game 30-27.U of L hit .229 to XU's .171 but found themselves down four at 23-19. Louisville battled back to tie at 27 and then scored three of the last four points to take the game 30-28.
Already down 14-11, XU let U of L run off on a 8 point swing to fall behind 21-12 and could not get back into the game. U of L hitting of .321 in the final set helped keep the Musketeers at arm's length.
