Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's basketball team defeated the Georgetown Hoyas 89-68 Wednesday night in Freedom Hall, improving to 13-3 overall and 4-1 in the BIG EAST. Jazz Covington led five Cardinals in double figures with a season-high 29 points. Covington finished the game, connecting on an impressive 12 of 12 from the field and 5 of 5 from the line. Connie Neal and Katie Olson finished with 11 points and Missy Taylor and Angel McCoughtry finished with 10 points. The Hoyas were lead in both scoring and rebounding by Katrina Wheeler with 19 points and 11 boards.
"Anytime you get a win in this conference it's a good statement," said head coach Tom Collen. "It's good to be 4-1. I'm happy about that. I felt like we needed to be in this position before we went out on this next stretch on the road. Whether we're ready or not, I don't know. I don't think we looked like a Top 25 team tonight on the defensive end of the floor. That was the most frustrating part for me. And another thing is that I think we don't do a good job of finishing a game out."
"It was good to see Jazz have another break out game. Any kid that goes 12-12, maybe she needs to have 20 shots instead of 12. We didn't do a good job of getting her the ball early, but we did eventually get it in to her. Then she just went out and worked and got some off the offensive glass and that's a big difference maker. That builds her confidence. Our plan was to get it to her all night long."
From the opening tip to the final buzzer, the Cardinals dominated the scoreboard. Louisville capitalized on Georgetown's 11 first half turnovers scoring 14 points off those miscues. Louisville used late a 19-7 run to finish out the first half and led 45-25 at the break. Georgetown finished the first half shooting 31 percent from the field while Louisville shot 51.5 percent.
Louisville started the second half with a three-point play by Covington. The Hoyas then went on an 18-4 run to pull within nine with 12:30 left in the game. The Cardinals answered with a 12-4 run of their own over the next two and a half minute stretch to go up 64-47 with 10:07 remaining and never looked back.
Louisville finished the game shooting 52.2 percent from the field and 84.6 percent from the line. Georgetown finished the game shooting 40.4 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from behind the arc. The Cardinals won the battle on the boards with a 38-33 edge. Louisville committed 15 turnovers while the Hoyas finished with 20.
Louisville will be back in action on January 21st as they travel to No. 9/10 Rutgers. The game will be broadcast live on WKRD 790 at 2:00 p.m.
