MURRAY, Ky. - Junior Heather Engel's goal in the 66th minute lifted the University of Louisville women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Murray State on Wednesday.
"Heather Engel was instrumental for us today and not just the goal she scored," Head Coach Karen Ferguson said.
"She is in a tremendous amount of pain, recovering from a broken ankle, and while she was unable to play the entire match, she had a big impact during the minutes she played."
Sophomore Monique Gjini, who leads the Cardinals in scoring this season, worked down the right side and found Engel in front at 65:07 for the only goal of the match.
The Cards (4-1-0) outshot the Racers (0-4-0) 6-5 in a scoreless first half, with corner kicks holding even at two apiece. In the second stanza, U of L increased the advantage to 9-4 on shots and 2-0 on corners.
Freshman keeper Deana Waintraub improved to 4-0-0 on the season, making four saves and earning her third shutout of the season.
Gjini had six shots on the afternoon, while Liz Kinny added four and Engel had three for the Red and Black.
Louisville will return to Cardinal Park on Sunday when they host Western Kentucky for the first ever meeting between the two teams. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. for the Family Weekend match, and admission is free.
