
Field Hockey Defeats Northwestern 4-3

EVANSTON Ill. - - The No. 14-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated host Northwestern 4-3 Sunday.
The Cardinals struck first when junior Carrie Jackson sent a pass from senior Jen Payne past NU goalkeeper Sherri-Anne Nyberg at the 8:47 mark.
The Wildcats responded two minutes later as Holly Palin tallied an unassisted goal to tie the game at 1-1.
The Cards regained the lead on a penalty corner at the 18:57 mark when sophomore Janelle Avila connected on a pass from junior Lisa Wasser.
Northwestern answered again when Meghan Small took Palin's assist to tie the game at 2-2 with under ten minutes remaining in the first half. The teams entered halftime with the score knotted at 2-2.
In the second half, Avila notched her second goal of the game with on another Payne assist as the Cards pulled ahead 3-2 at the 57:20 mark.
Louisville sophomore Casey Diener tacked on the eventual game- winner seven minutes later, delivering an unassisted goal to give the Cards a 4-2 lead.
Northwestern's Jill Putnam scored on a penalty corner with 10 seconds remaining in the game to cut the lead to 4-3.
Louisville sophomore goalkeeper Marie-Claire Heller (7-2) had three saves in the win. Northwestern's Nyberg had eight stops. Northwestern outshot Louisville 21-20 and finished with a 9-7 edge in penalty corners. The Wildcats drop to 5-2 on the season.
"This was a great game," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "Both teams battled and we both really fought hard until the very end. I was pleased that we set the pace and continued it throughout the entire game."
U of L (7-2) will play host to Saint Louis Friday, Sept. 23 at Trager Stadium at 3 p.m. The Cards will then open BIG EAST play against Syracuse Sunday at 1 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
