The University of Louisville women's tennis team signed three recruits to national-letters-of-intent. Bianca Gorbea, Maria Klokotzky and Natalia Baez will all contine their tennis careers as Cardinals.
"This is, by far, the best recruiting class that I have signed since I came to U of L," said Greg Davis, U of L head coach. "These players come to us with a great deal of international experience throughout their junior careers. I think they will help put us in a great position as we make the move to the Big East Conference."
Gorbea, of Isabela, Puerto Rico, is the No. 1 player in Juniors for Puerto Rico Girl's 18 division. She is ranked in the top 150 in the United States and represented Puerto Rico by playing for the Federation Cup Team.
"We are extremely excited to be adding Bianca to the team for next fall. She was heavily recruited by Big Ten teams among others," said Davis. "I feel Bianca is someone who can step in and help us right away."
Klokotzky, of Ottawa, Ontario is the No. 1 ranked player in the province of Ontario coming off winning a sectional tournament championship win. She has been consistently ranked in the Top 10 in her age group in Canada.
"Maria is someone who I feel can make an immediate impact and able to challenge for the top spot on our team as a freshman," sais Davis. "She will be one of the top freshment in the Big East next year. She is a hard-nosed player who is very solid technically and is a great competitor."
Baez, of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, played in the Federation Cup representing the Dominican Republic, as well.
"She has the blue collar work ethic that I like," said Davis. I feel she can really add to the depth of our team and push for a spot in the lineup as a freshman."
The Cardinals are coming off their third straight 20-win season in 2005.
"These three are players who can make an immediate impact and combined with our two freshmen players who were hurt earlier in the year (Stephania Velazquez and Ariana Marshall) it will be like having five new players next fall to work with," said Davis. "I feel that next year's group's strong point will be depth and outstanding work ethic. These and other intangibles will take us up to the next level next fall."
