U of L Wins Four Event Titles, Sets One School Record at 2005 Cardinal Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville athletes won four event titles and set one school record at Saturday's Cardinal Invitational on a cool and windy day at the Cardinal Park Track Stadium on the U of L campus. The meet was scored as double-dual meet for the men's and women's teams from U of L, Ohio State and the University of Indianapolis.
The Cardinal women split its dual matches with a 78-30 win over Indianapolis and an 82-53 loss to Ohio State while the Cardinal men also split its matches with a 63-32 win over Indianapolis and a 72-48 loss to the Buckeyes. The OSU men defeated the UI 74-31 while the OSU women defeated UI 80-30.
Leading the way for the Cardinal women were senior Ify Akubeze, who won the long jump, and sophomore Aajah Showell, who set a new school record and earned second place in the 100-meter hurdles. Akubeze, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, won the long jump with a mark of 17 feet, 4.75 inches to best a field of 11. Showell, a native of Waldorf, Md., broke her own school record in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.11 seconds. Showell's previous record was 14.36 set at the 2004 Conference USA Championships.
The Cardinal men won three event titles led by senior John Blackwell's win in the shot put. Blackwell, a Louisville native and a Male High School graduate, won his first event title of the season with a mark of 49-07.00 to best a field of nine entries. Freshman Brad Keys, a native of South Charleston, W.V., won his second title of the season in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.68 seconds while sophomore Antoine Wilson, a native of Versailles, Ky., won his first title of the season in the long jump with a mark of 19-01.25.
"We're pleased with the way everything transpired at first home meet and we really appreciate all of the support we received from our fans and from everyone who helped make this event the success that it was," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "I thought we did a nice job of competing as a team in some difficult weather conditions with the cool temperatures and strong winds."
Other Top 5 individual finishers for the Cardinal women included Jennifer Hartig, second, pole vault, 11-11.75; Christine Krellwitz, second, high jump, 5-04.00; Ashley Ruberg, second, 3,000m steeplechase, 12:24.92; Ify Akubeze, third, triple jump, 37-00.25; Aajah Showell, third, long jump, 16-10.75; Anita Winters-Dixon, third, 200m, 25.01; Michele Burke, fourth, triple jump, 36-10.50; Kourtney Trainor, fourth, 400m hurdles, 1:05.23; Kim Allen, fifth, 100m hurdles, 15.32.
Other Top 5 individual finishers for the Cardinal men included P.J. Fox, second, 800m, 1:55.34; Sean Hopper, second, pole vault, 13-11.25; Wesley Korir, second, 1,500m, 3:59.37; Nathan Navaro, second, 400m hurdles, 55.74; Marcus Barnes, third, 100m, 11.12; Robbie Moore, third, pole vault, 13-11.25; Nathan Navaro, third, 110m hurdles, 15.07.
Up next, the Cardinal men's and women's track and field teams will compete at the Butler Twilight on April 30 in Indianapolis, Ind.
