
Cardinals advance to the semifinals

Charlotte, NC - The University of Louisville women's basketball team defeated Marquette 69-54 in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament Friday evening in Halton Arena. Four Cardinals scored in double figures with sophomore Katie Olson scoring a career-high 20 points. Christina Quaye led the Golden Eagles with 23 points.
Jessica Huggins and Katie Olson hit two three-pointers in the early minutes of the second half for a 10-2 run to go up 34-19 at the 15:41 mark. Marquette cut the lead to 10 with a jumper by Carolyn Kieger but the Cardinals then went on a 7-0 run to go up 47-30 at the 11 minute mark.
Quaye hit two free throws for Marquette and Kieger hit another jumper to cut the lead to 49-34 with 9:14 remaining. Louisville went on a 6-0 run led by Angel Bradley's four points to give the Cardinals their biggest lead of the game at 55-34 at the 7:12 mark.
The Cardinals kept the 21-point lead until the 5:13 mark when the Golden Eagles went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 58-44 with just over three minutes left to play. Olson hit a jumper to stop the run but Danielle Kamm hit a three-pointer to get the Golden Eagles within 13 points. Jazz Covington connected on a layup to push the lead to 62-47 with 2:30 remaining.
Lesley Juedes connected on two free throws and Quaye hit a three to cut the lead to 62-53 with just over a minute left to play. The Cardinals shot 8 of 8 from the free throw line to seal the win.
The Cardinals shot 53.8 percent from field and 66.7 percent from the three-point line in the second half. Louisville finished the game shooting 44.4 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from behind the three-point line. Marquette finished the game shooting 35.7 percent from the field and just 18.2 percent from behind the three-point line. Louisville outrebounded Marquette 37-32.
With the win the Cardinals notched their 500th program victory. The Cardinals will face Houston in the semifinals tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. DePaul and TCU will play in the first semifinal at 2:00 p.m.
