JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Former University of Louisville standout wide receiver Deion Branch was named Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXXIX after matching a Super Bowl record with 11 catches for 133 yards in leading the New England Patriots to a 24-21 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Branch, a member of the Cardinals from 2000-01, was a second round selection (65th pick overall) by the Patriots in the 2002 National Football League Draft after earning First Team All-Conference USA honors in 2001 and 2000. In 2001, he led C-USA with 1,188 yards receiving on 72 receptions and nine touchdowns.
With the victory, Branch and the Pats defeated another former Cardinal, Eagles' placekicker David Akers, who played for U of L from 1993-96.
