Louisville, Ky. - The Louisville women's basketball team defeated Indiana 72-67 Sunday afternoon at Freedom Hall. Louisville newcomer Helen Johnson scored a career-high to lead four Cardinals in double figures with 20 points. Covington recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Missy Taylor and Katie Olson each added 12 points respectively.
"Wins are always good," said head coach Tom Collen. "One positive was we got ourselves into a game that was very competitive deep into the second half. We had enough confidence and poise to step up and make enough plays to pull away and beat a pretty formidable opponent. I think Indiana will do well in the Big Ten this year."
The game got off to a slow start with the Cardinals falling behind 15-10 with 12 minutes left to play in the first half. At the 9:25 mark, the Cards went on 19-10 run making the score 32-29 at the half. Helen Johnson came off the bench to lead the Cardinals with 9 points in the half.
The Hoosiers cut the lead to 51-49 at the 7:54 mark, but Johnson nailed a three-pointer to push the lead to five. Indiana cut the lead to two again with 8:30 remaining. The teams traded baskets before Johnson hit another trey to spark a 15-2 run to move ahead 66-51 with 2:10 remaining. The Hoosiers hit four consecutive three-pointers in the final 30 seconds but it was not enough.
"We are not as good as we need to be," said Collen. "This team is clearly a work in progress. We have a lot of good returning players. We have some new pieces and we need to figure out how those pieces fit. But we will get better."
The Cardinals will be back in action as they host Xavier Saturday, Dec. 10 at 6:00 p.m. in Freedom Hall.
