
Women's Basketball Falls to Texas Tech 68-57

Cancun, Mexico - The Cardinals fell 68-57 to Texas Tech in the first round of the Caribbean Classic. Three Cardinals scored in double figures with Missy Taylor leading the way with 14 while Jazz Covington added 13 and Yuliya Tokova chipped in 10. Senior LaToya Davis led all scorers with 24 points and Erin Myric added 16 for the Red Raiders.
Louisville was plagued with early foul trouble in the first half. Covington played on 3:30 in the first half before being saddled with two fouls. The Cards led early in the first half, building an 11-6 lead at the 16:54 mark. After Covington took the bench, Texas Tech went on a 12-0 run to move ahead 18-13 with 11 minutes left to play.
The Cardinals fought back with a 6-2 run of their own to cut the lead to 20-19 with eight minutes to play in the half. The game remained close until the Red Raiders closed out the half with a 10-0 run for a 33-23 lead at the break. Louisville finished the half shooting a season-low 29 percent from the field. Texas Tech shot 28 percent from the half.
The Red Raiders came out and went on a 11-0 run to start the second half, going up 44-23 with 16:24 remaining. The Cardinals were held scoreless until Taylor nailed a jumper to stop the drought. Texas Tech built its biggest lead of 26 points (60-34) with 9:53 left to play. Louisville then went on a 23-6 run to cut the lead to 66-55 with 1:24 left to play but it was too late.
Louisville finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field and for the first time all season did not hit a three-point shot. Texas Tech finished the game shooting 54.9 percent from the field and just 25 percent from the three-point line. The Red Raiders held a 28-26 rebounding edge.
The Cardinals will be back in action against Western Michigan Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 4:30 p.m.
