NEW YORK - - University of Louisville defensive end Elvis Dumervil was tabbed an Associated Press All-American on Tuesday, becoming just the third one in school history.
It's the fourth All-American honor this season for Dumervil, who was named an AFCA, Walter Camp and a Football Writers Association of America. Last week, Dumervil became the school's first national award winner, as the 6-0, 255-pounder was named the Bronko Nagurski winner as the nation's top defensive player by the FWAA. He was also a finalist for the Vince Lombardi Award for the nation's Top Lineman.
Dumervil is just the third first team AP All-American in school history and the first since 1957. Lenny Lyles was a first team AP All-American as a running back in 1957 and running back Tom Lucia was also a first teamer in 1949.
Leading the nation in sacks with 20, Dumervil was tabbed the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and was also named first team All-BIG EAST. The 6-0, 255-pounder is second on the team in tackles with 63 and leads the team with 23 tackles for loss.
He set three NCAA records this season. He set an NCAA mark by recording six sacks in a game versus Kentucky and nine in consecutive game. He also set the single-season record for forced fumbles in a season with 10.
The Cardinals face Virginia Tech in the Toyota Gator Bowl on January 2 in Jacksonville, Fla.
