
Women's Basketball Downs Georgia Southern 88-44

Murfreesboro, Tenn. - The Louisville women's basketball used an impressive first half performance to defeat Georgia Southern 88-44 in the MTSU Classic Saturday afternoon at the Murphy Center. Three Cardinals scored in double figures, freshman Angel McCoughtry recorded a career-high with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Connie Neal followed up with 17 points and newcomer Helen Johnson finished with 14 points.
The Cardinals started the first half with a 9-0 run, hitting three consecutive three-pointers to start the game. Georgia Southern cut the lead to 14-11 with 12 minutes remaining in the half. Then Louisville went on a 14-0 run to go up 31-12 at the eight minute mark of the first half. The Eagles hit a three-pointer to stop the run on the next possession but the Cardinals held them scoreless until the final two minutes to go up 44-15. Louisville went into the lockerroom with a 50-17 lead.
McCoughtry led the Cardinals at the half with 11 points. Louisville finished the half shooting 63.3 percent while holding the Eagles to just 20.7 percent shooting from the field. The Cardinals hit 58.3 percent from behind the arc while Georgia Southern held an 18-17 rebounding edge at the half.
The Cardinals started the second half with a 24-7 run to put the game out of reach. Louisville built their biggest lead of 50 at the 10:28 mark after Neal hit her fifth three-pointer of the game.
Louisville finished the game shooting 54.0 percent from the field while holding Georgia Southern to 27.0 percent shooting. The Cardinals shot a season-high 47.6 percent from behind the arc while the Eagles shot 21.4 percent. Louisville outrebounded Georgia Southern 41-36.
