WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The University of Louisville women's track and field team opened the indoor season by winning eight events titles at Saturday night's Purdue Invitational at Lambert Fieldhouse in West Lafayette, Ind. The meet, which included women's teams from Purdue, Illinois-Chicago, Xavier, Chicago State and Vincennes, was not a scored event.
The Cardinals, in their first meet under the direction of head coach Ron Mann, were led by senior Jacey Hughes who set a new school record in the pole vault with her first-place mark of 12 feet, 5.5 inches. The native of Utica, Ky., also holds the U of L school record in the outdoor pole vault.
Senior sprinter Anita Winters-Dixon had a strong day for the Cardinals earning individual titles in the 200-meter dash (26.08s) and the 400-meter dash (58.33s) and ran the opening leg in U of L's first-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay (4:02.36). The Chino, Calif., native's time of 58.33 seconds in the 400m is the third-fastest indoor time ever by a Cardinal runner in the event.
"We're very pleased with the way we performed today," Mann said. "This is a great way to open the season and it was a very good meet for us. We got great leadership and great performances from Jacey (Hughes) and Anita (Winters-Dixon) and that made a big difference."
Junior Kourtney Trainor earned first place in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:38.72, the second fastest time in school history, while senior Kelley Bowman, the school record holder in the high jump, won another title in that event with a mark of 5-06.00.
Junior Shareka Nance brought home first-place honors in the triple jump with a personal best mark of 36 feet, 4.75 inches, while sophomore Aajah Showell won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.99 seconds.
"To win eight event titles in the first meet of the season is a great first step for us," Mann said. "We exceeded my expectations in a lot of ways today, and this is a great starting point for us to build on as the season moves forward."
Up next, the Cards will compete at the Ohio State University Invitational on Jan. 29 in Columbus, Ohio.
