LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's and women's track and field teams will host a pair of home meets at Cardinal Park as a part of the 2005 schedule released today by head coach Ron Mann. U of L will host a four-way meet on April 2 at the Cardinal Park track facility followed by the Cardinal Invitational on April 23.
The Cardinal women will open the indoor season on the weekend of Jan. 15 at the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind., while both the men's and women's squads will open the outdoor season on the weekend of March 19 at the Baldy Castillo Invitational hosted by Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz.
"We're really excited about hosting a pair of home meets in 2005," said Mann, in his first season at the helm of the U of L track and field program. "We want to reach out to the local track and field community and create a very positive atmosphere around our program here at U of L. We hope these meets will help show everyone in the city of Louisville and the surrounding area what our program has to offer and why we're so excited."
Following the indoor opener at Purdue, the U of L women will compete at the McDonald's Invitational hosted by Southern Illinois University on Jan. 22, the Meyo Classic hosted by Notre Dame University on Feb. 5, the Hoosier Hills Invitational hosted by Indiana University on Feb. 18 and the Conference USA Championships on Feb. 25-26 in Houston, Texas. The NCAA Indoor Championships are scheduled for March 11-12 in Fayetteville, Ark.
After the outdoor opener at Arizona State, the Cards' men's and women's teams will compete at the Alabama Relays on March 26 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., the four-way home meet on April 2, the Commodore Invitational hosted by Vanderbilt University on April 16, the home Cardinal Invite on April 23, the Jesse Owens Classic hosted by Ohio State University on April 30 and the Butler Twilight on May 7 in Indianapolis, Ind. The Conference USA Outdoor Championships are set for May 19-21, while the NCAA Mideast Regionals will be on May 27-28 in Bloomington, Ind., followed by the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 8-11 in Sacramento, Calif.
"I think this is a very challenging and demanding schedule for us," Mann said. "We're hitting a lot of competitive meets in the region and it should be a very good test for our program. We're also taking the team to Arizona State to open the outdoor season and that should be a great experience for everyone."
