LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville men's thrower Arthur Turland earned a sixth-place finish in the discus and a seventh-place finish in the hammer while representing his native country of Canada at last weekend's 2004 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Championships for athletes under 23 years of age at the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec, Canada. Turland, a U of L junior-to-be from Kincardine, Ontario, had a toss of 51.15 meters in the discus to take sixth in that event and a throw of 48.67 meters to finish seventh in the hammer. Turland, 22, qualified for the event after meeting the necessary entry standards during the 2004 U of L track season. The NACAC Championships were the latest event in a busy and successful spring and summer for Turland. On July 9-11, Turland competed at the 2004 Canadian Track & Field Championships and Olympic Trials in Victoria, British Columbia, where he earned a sixth-place finish in the discus and a ninth-place finish in the hammer. On May 28-29, Turland competed at the NCAA Mideast Regional in Baton Rouge, La., in the discus and the hammer and also earned top-4 finishes in the discus, hammer and javelin at the 2004 Conference USA Outdoor Championships on May 13-15 in Louisville.
