INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Lauren Podvin's unassisted goal in the 21st minute broke a scoreless tie and lifted the University of Louisville women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Butler in the season opener Friday. "I am extremely pleased with how we played today," noted Head Coach Karen Ferguson. "We controlled play and were able to get a win against a quality opponent like Butler. I'm looking forward to the rest of the fall because I think this team has some more wins in it," she added. The Cards dominated the match, outshooting the Bulldogs(0-1-0) 20-2, including a 12-0 edge in the first half. Podvin, a sophomore transfer from George Mason in her first year with the Cards(1-0-0), picked up a loose ball in a scramble and put it away for her second career goal and first as a Cardinal. Freshman Tiffany Hansen picked up a shutout in her first career start, facing just two shots. The Cards were paced in shots by freshman Monique Gjini, sophomore Heather Engel and senior Mandy Rost, with each chipping in four. Podvin had three shots, freshman Jen Avila had two and Ashley Garcia, Hollie Minogue and Jamie Craft had one apiece. Twelve of U of L's shots were on goal, lead by Engel who had four. The Cards will next travel to Athens, Ohio to face the Ohio Bobcats on Thursday. Louisville will open the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, September 4th at 7:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park against tenth-ranked Ohio State. The match will be televised locally in Louisville on ICN-2 on a tape-delayed basis on September 5th at 9:00 p.m. and September 6th at 8:30 p.m.
