LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Former Air Force Academy assistant Floyd Brazier has been named assistant coach for the University of Louisville track and field program Cardinals' head coach Ron Mann announced today. Brazier, who comes to Louisville after a four-year stint as an assistant with the Falcons' track and field program, will oversee the Cardinals' sprints and hurdles as well as handling the recruiting duties in the northwest U.S. "I'm really pleased to have someone with Floyd's knowledge and background joining our coaching staff," said Mann. "Floyd's a very talented coach and he has a great understanding of what we're trying to do here at the University of Louisville. It should be a great fit for everyone." While at Air Force, Brazier handled the Falcons' sprints and hurdles where he coached five Mountain West Conference (MWC) champions in the hurdles, eight NCAA Midwest Regional qualifiers in 13 events and 40 All-MWC athletes in the sprints and hurdles. Also, the three fastest times ever run in the MWC in the 60-meter high hurdles and the four fastest in the 110-meter high hurdles were all registered by athletes coached by Brazier during his stint at Air Force. "My being here to support this program and all the athletes, to help build what will be one of the greatest sports legacies in the country and to be a part of the vibrant, growing community at the University of Louisville, in the city and throughout the state of Kentucky is an opportunity for which I am overwhelmed with excitement and gratitude," said Brazier, who has also been commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel, the highest honor awarded by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. A 1998 graduate of the Air Force Academy with a B.S. in Behavioral Science, Brazier earned four letters in track and field while competing in hurdles and sprints. In 1997, he was a member of the Falcons' 800-meter relay team that set a school record at the Texas Relays, while in 1995 he was a member of the 4x400-meter relay team that finished second at the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships and the mile relay team that earned third at the WAC Indoor Championships. The Maple Valley, Wash., native also earned three letters in football as a running back for the Falcons. "I can sincerely say that I believe Floyd Brazier is the brightest young sprints coach in the nation," said Air Force track & field head coach Ralph Lindeman. "The University of Louisville is very fortunate to have him joining their track and field program. He's been a very important asset to our program here at Air Force for several years, and he will truly be missed." Brazier joins assistant coaches Brice Allen, Warren Bye and Manette Cheshareck on head coach Ron Mann's first U of L track and field coaching staff.
