
Cardinal Men Place Second at Vanderbilt Track & Field Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Louisville men's track and field team set 12 personal records to finish second overall at the Vanderbilt Invitational Saturday in Nashville.
The Cardinals tallied 137 points for the runner-up finish. Middle Tennessee State won the 17-team competition with 167 points.
Leading the Cardinals during the day were the throwers. Sophomore Arthur Turland won the javelin with a mark of 175 feet, 6 inches and had runner-up efforts in the discus (167-11) and hammer throw (179-5 - personal record). Senior Joe Swiderski also had a big day as he won the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 179-5 and placed third in the javelin at 168-11.
Senior Josh Brannen finished third in the hammer throw (163-5), while sophomore Brandon Cook had a pair of top-10 finishes, placing fourth in the discus (163-3) and ninth in the hammer throw (138-7). Senior Troy Williams finished sixth in the shot put (42-11.75) and 10th in the discus (139-1) to round out the Cardinal thrower performances.
In the 3000-meter run, redshirt freshman Michael Jesse and sophomore Brian Hurst placed 1-2 with two of the fastest times in school history. Jesse won the race in 8 minutes, 31.87 seconds, the third fastest ever by a Cardinal, while Hurst was runner-up in 8:34.33, the fourth fastest at U of L.
The Cards' 4x400-meter relay team won its race in 3:16.43. Senior Ryan Bridgeman finished ninth in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 48.22, the eighth fastest time in school history. Sophomore Steven Perkins (49.08) and freshman Josh Jager (50.22) also turned in personal-best times to place 10th and 11th, respectively.
Senior Dennis Wolff had a solid effort in the 800-meter run, finishing fourth in 1:54.10. Sophomore Vernon Stephen was ninth (1:54.99) and sophomore Chris Davis was 10th (1:55.96), both with personal records in the event.
Louisville had three finishers in the top 10 in the 1500-meter run, led by freshman Wes Seacat's sixth-place showing in 3:59.85. Stephen (4:00.24) and Davis (4:01.55) placed eighth and ninth, respectively, again with personal records.
Freshman Ronnie Stringer was 11th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.88 and redshirt freshman Antoine Wilson was fourth in the triple jump (46.7.50) to round out the Cardinals' personal records on the day.
