The University of Louisville women's tennis team, hampered with injuries, still came up with enough mettle to challenge visiting SMU before falling 4-3 Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Team.
"This team has no quit in them," said Greg Davis, U of L head coach. "It was an all-out battle with a very good team in SMU."
U of L dropped the doubles point with Kelly Taylor and Natalie Laszkowski falling 8-5 at No.1 to Svetlana Kouzmenko and Kit Carson at No. 1. The No. 2 pair of Leslie Stewart and Michele Spiess held on to win 8-5 but SMU's Lynsie Jones and Nadia Vaughan handled Paige Eber and Christina Gogol at No. 3.
"I think SMU is definitely a top 50 team in my opinion," said Davis, whose team is now 8-3. "I couldn't ask my team to do any more than they did. They took the battle to them.
SMU, on a three-match losing streak, won the top three spots in singles, including a default by U of L No. 1 player Leslie Stewart. Taylor battled Vaughan to a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 4. Julia Hierl won easily with a 6-0, 6-3 posted over Allison Leuszler. Fellow frosh Natalie Laszkowski held off Hailey Rambally 6-3, 7-5 for the three U of L points.
"Sunday's match with Marshall and IUPUI will be a battle as we are dealing with some injury situations. But this team won't give in," said Davis.
