
Field hockey edges Kent State 3-2 in OT

KENT, Ohio - - The University of Louisville field hockey team defeated host Kent State 3-2 in overtime in a Mid-American Conference matchup. The Cardinals improve to 9-8 (7-1 MAC). Kent State falls to 7-7 (5-2).
U of L jumped on the scoreboard just three minutes into the game when senior Suzanne Irwin connected on a pass from freshman Janelle Avila to give the Cards the 1-0 lead.
The teams battled through the rest of the first half before Kent State's Liz Fettrow capitalized on a penalty corner with an assist from Kate McGowan to tie the game at 1-1 with 4:48 remaining in the first half. At the break, Kent State held a 9-2 advantage in shots and held a 3-0 edge in penalty corners.
KSU took the lead midway through the second half when Amy McGowan took a pass from Berber Rischen and blasted a shot from the top of the circle to give the Golden Flashes a 2-1 lead.
Louisville sophomore Lisa Wasser delivered a shot to tie the game, but it hit the post. The Cardinals recovered a few minutes later when sophomore Jessica Javelet tipped a pass from junior Rachel Overton from the right corner of the circle to tie the game at 2-2 just 51 seconds remaining in regulation. The Cardinals outshot Kent State 11-7 and held an 8-3 penalty corner advantage in the second half.
With the score still tied at 2-2, the teams entered a 15 minute seven-a-side overtime period. The Cardinals took four shots in the OT period - including a shot by Avila that hit the post. Sophomore Lisa Wasser sent a pass to Avila who got past KSU goalkeeper Linz Markwart for the game-winner with 2:58 remaining in the overtime period .
"I'm extremely proud of our young team for getting on the road and playing in a very tough environment," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "They made the necessary changes to get back to our game plan and stay on task with what we came to do. This will be good experience for us to build on as we head into the postseason."
Louisville goalkeeper freshman Marie-Claire Heller (8-4) had five saves in the win. Markwart posted five saves, but took the loss for the Golden Flashes. U of L outshot Kent State18-16 and held a 9-6 edge in penalty corners.
The Cardinals will travel to Athens, Ohio to play MAC opponent Ohio University on Saturday, Oct. 23.
