
Field Hockey Defeats Ball State 4-2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team celebrated senior day with a 4-2 win over Mid-American Conference opponent Ball State Saturday at Trager Stadium. The win avenged Louisville's only conference loss this season.
Ball State jumped to a 1-0 lead six minutes into the game when Carla Chiampi sent a shot that went in off the pads of Louisville freshman goalkeeper Marie-Claire Heller.
U of L freshman Janelle Avila connected a pass from sophomore Jessica Javelet to tie the game at 1-1 with 12 minutes left in the half.
U of L pulled ahead 2-1 on sophomore Jen Kastelic's penalty corner goal with 7:36 remaining in the half.
Two minutes later, Avila delivered a shot on a penalty corner which was stopped by BSU goalkeeper Tracy Bannister. Louisville sophomore Jessica Javelet collected the rebound and sent a shot into the cage to give the Cards a 3-1 lead. U of L entered halftime with the 3-1 lead, having outshot Ball State 7-1 in the first half.
Ball State took advantage of another penalty corner to score again early in the second half. Holly Frantz scored with an assist from Maggie Durbin to make it a 3-2 game with 29:32 remaining.
Louisville senior Kimberly Hughes added an insurance goal on a direct penalty corner with assists from Kastelic and Rachel Overton to give the Cards a 4-2 lead with 9:51 left in the game.
The Ball State Cardinals had a chance to score again when they were awarded a penalty stroke with 6:19 remaining, but Heller came up with a save to preserve the 4-2 win for Louisville.
U of L finished the game with a 20-5 shot advantage and had 14 penalty corners to Ball State's 4. Heller (7-4) had two saves in the game to get the win. Ball State's Bannister (4-7) collected eight stops. BSU falls to 4-10 (4-3 MAC).
Louisville (8-8, 6-1) will continue MAC play at Kent State on Friday, Oct. 22 at 2:00 p.m.
