
Field Hockey Tops Kent State 3-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Sophomore Jessica Javelet posted her first career hat trick as the University of Louisville defeated visiting Kent State 3-1 in Mid-American Conference field hockey action Friday at Trager Stadium.
The game remained scoreless until 13:00 left in the first half when Javelet connected on a penalty corner with assists from junior April White and senior Kimberly Hughes to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Javelet struck again four minutes later when she deflected a shot from freshman Missy Briery to send the Cards into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
At the 43:15 mark in the game Javelet sealed the hat trick by scoring her third goal of the game off of a penalty corner shot from junior Rachel Overton to increase Louisville's lead to 3-0.
Kent State's Kate McGowan delivered a goal off the pads of Louisville freshman goalkeeper Marie-Claire Heller to put the Golden Flashes on the scoreboard with just over seven minutes left in the game making the score 3-1. Kent State had another opportunity to score when they were awarded a penalty corner in the final seconds of the game, but could not convert.
"We were finally able to put a complete game together for 70 minutes today," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "We played a tough opponent in Kent State and played well both offensively and defensively. Jessica Javelet took it to another level today."
Heller (3-2) picked up the win for the Cardinals allowing one goal and posting six saves. Kent State's Linz Markwart (3-6) took the loss allowing three goals and registering three saves. Louisville outshot KSU 11-10 but the Golden Flashes held a 10-9 edge in penalty corners. Kent State falls to 3-6 (1-1 MAC).
U of L (4-7, 2-1) will play host to MAC opponent Ohio University Saturday Oct. 2 at Trager Stadium at 1:00pm.
