The University of Louisville women's tennis team swept singles and won the doubles point for a 7-0 shutout of Butler University in the team's dual season opener Saturday afternoon at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
After setting a school record for wins last season with 22, U of L got off to a strong start. The Cardinals unveiled a new lineup with four new faces in singles and the lineup was a potent one. All six spots were two set matches.
"We played very well for the f irst match of the season," said head coach Greg Davis. "Our goal is to compete at a very high level each match and this was great start."
Michele Spiess took No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1. Junior college All-American Leslie Stewart took No. 2 doubles 6-3, 6-0. Returning veteran Kelly Taylor beat Tayo Bailey 6-1, 6-0 at No .3. Lone senior Paige Eber had a battle on her hands in the first set when Shaden Dowiatt challenged her before falling 7-6. Eber recovered nicely and took the second set 6-0. Freshmen Julia Hierl and Natalie Laszkowski both handled their opponents to help U of L to the sweep.
Stewart and Spiess won No. 1 doubles with Eber and Laszkowski pairing to win No. 3. The Cardinals play Austin Peay Saturday evening and then travel to Lexington Sunday to take on intrastate rival Kentucky.
