LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Massachusetts 5-0 Sunday at Trager Field. The Cardinals improve to 2-2 on the season while UMass falls to 2-3.
Louisville freshman Lisa Wasser got the Cards on the scoreboard just two minutes into the game when she connected on a penalty corner shot from junior Kim Hughes.
Cardinal sophomore Jen Payne deflected a hit from freshman Jessica Javelet at the 30:15 mark in the game to give U of L a 2-0 halftime lead.
In the second period, senior Desire' Miller blasted a shot from the top of the circle to increase Louisville's lead to 3-0 at the 47:27 mark.
Four minutes later, senior Olivia Netzler received a pass near the 50-yard line and carried it into the circle and netted the Cardinals' fourth goal of the game.
Senior Shelby Summers tipped a shot by Miller to give Louisville the 5-0 win.
U of L goalkeeper senior Christy Hershey collected three saves in the game and posted her first shutout of the season. UMass goalkeeper Christine Tocco posted 10 saves and allowed five goals. Louisville outshot the Minutewomen 18-3 and held a 10-0 penalty corner advantage.
The Cardinals will play host to Michigan State on Friday, Sept. 12 at 3:00 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
