Senior Sonja Percan had 13 kills and 11 digs for a double-double to lead the University of Louisville to a three-game sweep of Xavier in collegiate volleyball action at the Cintas Center.
U of L's record moves to 7-3 with the 30-25, 30-14, 30-22 win. Xavier drops to 5-8.
"We were hungry to play after the hurricane in North Carolina forced us to lose to matches last weekend," said Leonid Yelin. "We were able to get a look at a lot of different lineups which is good because we are still adjusting to the loss of Anastasia Zaitseva."
Battling a seven-match losing streak, Xavier tried to take an early lead at 15-13 on a kill by Kate Duchek. With eight tie scores in the early going, U of L gained the lead for good at 19-16 on an ace by Lena Ustymenko. Xavier used both its timeouts to try to shift momentum but could not regain the lead despite ouhitting Louisville .273 to .262 and outblocking them 2-1. Five Cardinal serving aces helped balance the stats deficit.
"We didn't have a great match statistically, but we also didn't hurt ourselves with errors.
Louisville popped out to a 17-4 lead in the second game and Xavier used both its timeouts tomake adjustments. The Musketeers could not recover from the deficit, especially with more errors than kills in hitting hampering the effort. U of L hit .444. Adriana Morris, in her first start of the season, had four kills in the set.
Trailing 14-9, Xavier used a 6-2 run to come within one at 16-15 after a kill by Kate Duchek. U of L recoiled with a 9-2 run of its own that included three kills by Sonja Percan and five errors by Xavier. A kill by freshman Steph Marsh sealed the win.
The Cardinals had two other players join Percan in double digit kills with Ustymenko and Bing Sun each adding 10. The Muskateers were outhit .382 to .144 and committed 11 service errors
The Cardinals open conference play next week when Marquette and DePaul visit Cardinal Arena.
