
Field hockey defeats Central Michigan 4-1

The fourteenth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team opened Mid-American Conference play with a 4-1 win over visiting Central Michigan Friday at Trager Stadium. The contest featured a matchup of the 2002 MAC regular season co-champions.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard midway through the first half when freshman Jessica Javalet connected on an assist from senior Shelby Summers to send the ball past Central Michigan starting goalkeeper Laura Plese.
The Cards added to their lead when Javelet beat the Chippewa defense and delivered a pass to senior Desire' Miller, who was waiting at the top of the circle. Miller nailed the shot, making it a 2-0 game at the 28:45 mark.
Central Michigan responded with 15 seconds remaining in the first half when Tarah Trottier tipped Kristy Reed's penalty corner shot to pull the Chippewas within 2-1 at the half.
Louisville added an insurance goal at the 38:14 mark in the game when senior Olivia Netzler connected on a feed from freshman Lisa Wasser and powered a shot past CMU reserve goalkeeper Danielle Frank.
Miller capped the scoring by placing a penalty stroke in the upper left corner of the cage with 19 seconds remaining in the game to give the Cards the 4-1 win.
Louisville goalkeeper senior Christy Hershey picked up the win, posting five saves in the game and allowing one goal. Plese took the loss for the Chippewas, allowing two goals and recording three saves. The Cardinals outshot CMU 16-9 while the Chippewas held a 9-7 penalty corner advantage. Central Michigan falls to 1-5 (0-1).
U of L (5-3, 1-0)will continue MAC play when the play host to Ball State Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
