LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville men's track and field head coach Gene Weis announced today that Chris Danks, Josh Jager and Wes Seacat have signed national letters-of-intent to continue their education and run track for the Cardinals.
"We're excited about the new people we have signed," said Weis. "We weren't in the market for too many faces since we return most everyone from last year, plus we are adding back several redshirted athletes, but we feel these three can be quite special. They are all very accomplished high school athletes and students."
Danks won three state championships as a senior at St. Henry High School (Erlanger, Ky.), including both the 1600-meter and 3200-meter in track. He also ran the state's Class A fastest 800-meter time of 1:57.89 last year. Danks' best times include 4:25.39 (1600m) and 9:37.9 (3200m).
"Chris has very promising speed for a distance runner, and he is highly competitive," said Weis. "That combination bodes well for success at this level. We have high hopes for him." Jager, a 6-4, 175-pound long sprinter from Highlands High School in Fort Thomas, Ky., won the 400-meter dash state championship with the state's fastest time of 49.52 as a senior. He placed fourth in the state in the 200-meter dash and also ran legs on the 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams that finished third and fifth, respectively. Jager's fastest 200-meter time is 22.48.
"Josh is a great looking athlete and shows impressive range as a long sprinter," Weis said. "We think he's only just begun to show what he is capable of."
Seacat twice finished among the top six in Indiana in the 1600-meter run at New Albany High School. As a senior, he ran one of the fastest 1600-meter times in the Midwest with a time of 4:19.53. Seacat was a state qualifier in the 3200-meter run and also had two top finishes during his career at the Midwest Footlocker Regional in cross country. His best times include 9:37.90 (3200m) and 15:54 (cross country 5K).
"Wes has been one of the stronger distance runners in the Midwest for two years," said Weis. "He is a very focused and committed athlete and is also an honor student. We feel he can help right away."
