PALO ALTO, Calif. - University of Louisville freshman Brandon Cook placed 17th overall in the discus at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend in Palo Alto, Calif. The event was held at the Cobb Track & Angell Field on the campus of Stanford University.
Cook, a native of Borden, Ind., recorded a throw of 163 feet, 6 inches at the event. Adam Kuehl of Arizona won the 26-person competition with a mark of 190-10.
In order to qualify for the Junior Championships, athletes must meet certain performance standards and be between the ages of 14-19 in the calendar year 2003. Cook, 19, qualified for the meet during the spring when he recorded a mark of 162-0 at the Cardinal Challenge, eclipsing the qualifying standard of 160-9.
Discus throwers at the competition threw the International Junior Size discus, which weighs 1.75 kg (as compared to the collegiate and Senior size of 2.00 kg and the high school size of 1.60 kg). The International Junior Size is only used in the United States for Junior Nationals and in Junior competitions outside this country.
The USA Junior National Team is selected from the top two finishers in each event, and the top eight finishers are tabbed Verizon All-Americans.
