CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Senior Cindy Roberson captured her second conference pole vault title of the season to lead the University of Louisville women's track and field team Friday during day two of the Conference USA Championships in Charlotte, N.C.
Louisville currently stands in second place with 43 points. South Florida leads the 13-team competition with 66 points. Houston (41.50), Cincinnati (41) and Marquette (36.50) are 3-4-5.
Roberson cleared 12 feet to win the title, equaling her first-place finish from the 2003 C-USA Indoor Championships earlier this year. Sophomore Jacey Hughes placed fourth for the Cardinals with a height of 11-6.25.
In the high jump, sophomore Kelley Bowman qualified for the NCAA Mid-East Regional after clearing 5-7 to finish runner-up in the event. Bowman becomes the fourth Cardinal to qualify for regionals, joining junior Mindy Helman (high jump), Hughes and Roberson (both pole vault).
Senior Brittany Hedgepeth also had a runner-up finish after jumping 19-0.75 in the long jump. It marked just the sixth time a U of L woman has jumped 19 feet and the fourth time by Hedgepeth.
Junior Kelly Faber and Helman turned in two of the top four scores in school history in the heptathlon. Faber finished sixth with 4674 points, the second highest total ever at U of L. Helman was eighth with 4599 points, fourth best by a Cardinal.
Freshman Katie Wilson matched her personal-best throw in the javelin with a fourth-place mark of 133-5. Freshman Emily Kost scored in a pair of events, finishing seventh in the hammer throw (157-1) and eighth in the discus (133-11).
In the 3000-meter steeplechase, juniors Beth Wendt and Laine Hamman each ran personal-best times. Wendt finished in 11:32.03 to place 10th, while Hamman came in at 11:52.34 to place 13th.
The championships concludes Saturday with 12 events yet to be scored.
