The University of Louisville women's tennis team beat Memphis 4-2 and advance to the semi-finals of the Conference USA Championship in New Orleans. The Cardinals will play No. 2 seeded TCU at 10 a.m. ET Monday.
The win sets the U of L school record for wins in a season as the Cards improve to 21-7 and guarantees the best finish in Conference USA Tournament history.
"We played the best doubles that we have all year," said first year head coach Greg Davis. No. 1 and No. 2 doubles played extremely well. We knew if we won the doubles point we could win because it would put a lot of pressure on Memphis and it did."
Marie Louise Frolich-Hansen and Kelly Taylor defeated Sabrina Lindemann and Monica Gonzalez-Gordo 8-4 in No. 1 singles. Julie Penn and Melisa San Martin beat Viktoria Gruber and Andrea Feichtinger 8-5 to win the doubles point.
In singles, Frolich-Hansen, a Danish native, battled the 85 degree heat and humidity of the New Orleans spring and won No. 1 singles 7-6, 6-1. Freshman Jasmin Singh came through with a win for the Cardinals at No. 6 with a decisive 6-3, 6-0 decision over Kristin Noble. Julie Penn's 6-3, 6-3 win over Feichtinger clinched the match for the Cardinals.
"Julie clinched our win for us when she broke at 5-3 and then went on to win to give us the fourth point," said Davis.
The Cardinals will tackle TCU, a team they have not faced this year in dual play in the semi-finals.
"The win over Cincinnati gave us a big boost for our confidence going into this match with Memphis. We are just real, real, real happy right now," said Davis. "TCU will be a big challenge for us but we are on a roll having won 10 of our last 11 matches. We feel like we can play with anyone right now."
