The University of Louisville women's tennis team gotright back on the winning track with a 7-0 win over Tennessee-Martin in their third match of the weekend. The Cardinals have now won seven of their last eight matches at 8-2.
"Our effort was much better today," said U of L first year head coach Greg Davis. "It was refreshing to see players fight at every position for the team. Maybe they didn't play their best tennis but the were fighting for the team."
Louisville easily won the doubles point. Marie Louise Frolich-Hansen and Kelly Taylor won over Eleanor Shearman and Gayatin Romesh. Paige Eber and Jasmin Singh won their doubles match as well with UT-M defaulting the No. 3 doubles to seal U of L's earning of that point.
Frolich Hansen had a long match on her hands at No. 1 singles but beat Shearman 6-4, 6-4. Taylor breezed through her match at No. 2, beating Romesh 6-1, 6-1. Eber beat Olivia Shipley 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and UTM defaulted at No. 6.
Louisville battled through two three-set matches at No. 3 and No. 4. At No. 4, Jasmin Singh won 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (10-6).
Perhaps the most striking win of the day was Julie Penn's three-set win over Jeanne de Wet. Penn, who is playing with troublesome back pain, was the last match on the court and perservered for the 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-5).
"Julie hung in there in a hard-fought win at No. 3 singles," said Davis. "Julie's success at No. 3 will play a big part in our success in the rest of the season. Women's tennis plays Indiana State (2/14) and Southern Illinois (2/15) at Bass-Rudd this coming weekend.
"We have two tough matches this week and we desperately needed this momentum after the defeat to Georgia State. This win was the first step in the way back," said Davis.
