The University of Louisville tennis team scored the doubles point and then took five of six singles matches to beat visiting Miami of Ohio 6-1 at Bass Rudd Tennis Center Saturday night. The Cardinals have won nine of their last 10 matches.
"This is a good win. Miami of Ohio has had our number the past couple years and to beat them was a good win," said U of L head coach Greg Davis. "Their team fights extremely hard and are well-coached. We just feel lucky to have had a little more depth."
The No. 1 doubles pair of Marie Louise Frolich- Hansen and Kelly Taylor won their eleventh match of the season as a duo. They won 9-7 over Megan Zimpfer and Brooke Peyton.
"Our No. 1 doubles team really did a good job after getting down 4-0 to come back to win 9-7," said Davis. "We really needed to win the doubles point. You don't let a team like Miami get up 1-0 and give them momentum going into singles."
At No. 3 doubles, Paige Eber and Jasmin Singh rolled over Ihze Meyer and Maura Trauernicht 8-1.
After winning the doubles, the Cardinals had a battle on their hands. Taylor lost her first set 2-6 at No. 2 singles and then came back to win 6-2, 6-2. Melisa San Martin dropped her first set 4-6, won the second 6-2 and then finished off with a 10-8 win. Singh beat Meyer at No. 5 singles 7-6, 6-4. After being edged in her doubles match, Julie Penn rebounded with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Nancy Wiegand at No. 3 singles.
"We had a very good performance in singles from Julie Penn, one of her best this year. It was fantastic," said Davis.
The Cardinals are idle until Feb. 28 when they travel to Columbia to play Missouri and Colorado.
"We have worked hard in getting momentum going with Missouri and Colorado ahead of us. Both are nationally ranked teams. Tonight was a bit of a struggle but we are very happy to get out with a win." said Davis.
