LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's track and field team will compete in eight different states in the spring and will host the Conference USA Outdoor Championships for the second time in three years as head coach Gene Weis announced the 2004 schedule today.
The Cardinals will start the outdoor season on the West Coast when they travel to Pomona, Calif., for the Carl Rossi Relays on February 28. The Cards will compete again out West one week later in the Bill Sawyer Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., before traveling to Alabama for the Alabama Relays on March 19.
After trips to Bowling Green, Ky., Oxford, Ohio and Nashville, Tenn., Louisville will host the Cardinal Open for the fourth straight year on April 23 at Cardinal Park.
The Cardinals will also send select student-athletes to the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia before competing in the Jesse Owens Classic at Ohio State and the Billy Hayes Invitational at Indiana. The 2004 C-USA Championships will be held May 13-15 at Cardinal Park.
Those athletes who meet selected qualifying marks will travel to Baton Rouge, La., for the NCAA Mid-East Regionals at the end of May with the goal of advancing on to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas.
The USATF Junior Nationals will be held in Buffalo, N.Y., while the U.S. Olympic Team Trials will be in Sacramento, Calif., for selected qualifiers.
"If we stay healthy and focused, this year's group could go down as one of our best men's track and field teams ever," said Weis. "We have a large contingent of fourth and fifth-year guys who provide us with great leadership and experience to go along with a very talented group of underclassmen. Our 2004 schedule provides some very attractive opportunities to showcase this talent."
