Kent State Clips Field Hockey 1-0 in OT

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team closed out the regular season with a 1-0 loss to Mid-American Conference foe Kent State Saturday at Trager Stadium.
The teams battled through a scoreless first half with the Golden Flashes outshooting the Cardinals 7-1 and holding a 5-1 penalty corner advantage. Louisville goalkeeper Christy Hershey posted five saves in the first half.
The second half featured a much tighter matchup, with KSU holding a 3-2 edge in shots and penalty corners even at 3-3. With neither team able to take advantage of any scoring opportunities, the game went into a 15 minute sudden-victory overtime period.
Kent State prevailed midway through the extra period when Jennifer Melnyk broke away from defenders and scored the only goal of the contest, giving the Golden Flashes the 1-0 win.
With the victory, Kent State (10-9, 7-2) claimed the regular season MAC title. KSU outshot the Cards 11-3 and held an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners. Hershey finished the game with six saves for the Cardinals.
Louisville (11-9, 6-4) finishes tied for second in the league with Central Michigan. The Cards will travel to Kent, Ohio to compete in the MAC Tournament Nov. 7-9.
