LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team fell to California 1-0 Tuesday at Trager Stadium. The Bears are currently No. 20 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association rankings.
The teams were evenly matched in the first half with each side recording three shots and three penalty corners while battling to a scoreless halftime.
California's Nora Fedderson finally broke the tie with just under eight minutes remaining in the game when she received a free hit, dribbled into traffic in the middle of the circle and lifted the ball past Louisville goalkeeper Christy Hershey.
Louisville drew seven corners and delivered 10 shots in the second half, but could not capitalize on the opportunities. The Bears tried to add to their lead with two penalty corners in the closing seconds of the game, but could not convert.
U of L outshot California 13-8 and held a 10-6 advantage in penalty corners. California improves to 8-3 on the season. Cal goalkeeper Kelly Knapp posted three saves in the shutout while Hershey had four stops in goal for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals (8-8, 4-3 Mid-American Conference) are back in action Saturday, Oct. 25 when they face MAC opponent Miami (Ohio) at 1:00 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
