LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's tennis team and UT-Chattanooga battled nearly four hours, but the Cardinals came away with a 5-2 win Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards improve to 5-1 on the season.
U of L began the match by taking the doubles point as the team of Marie Louis Frolich-Hansen and Kelly Taylor defeated Chattanooga's Catherine Allen and Saskia van Velze 8-3 at the top seed and Melisa San Martin and Julie Penn beat Cynthia Oulevay and Bethany Everett 8-3 at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles match between Louisville's Paige Eber and Jasmin Singh and Chattanooga's Charlotte Goude and Lauren Snipes was halted.
In singles action, Frolich-Hansen posted a 6-2, 7-5 win over Oulevay at the top seed and Taylor outlasted Allen 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 at the two-spot. San Martin's 6-3, 7-6 win over Goude at the three-spot clinched the match for the Cardinals. Eber defeated Snipes 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6. Chattanooga's Van Velze was ahead 6-4, 4-1 when Penn retired, while Everett scored the other singles point for the Mocs with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Singh at the five-spot.
"This was a good win for us, and a great way to start our home schedule," said Greg Davis. "The key to being a good team is to be able to win even though you're not playing well. We started out playing strong doubles, probably the best we've played all year. We struggled a bit in singles, but fought back to win the match. Kelly Taylor was down a set and a break and fought back to win in three. Melisa San Martin battled through being down in the second set to win a 7-6 decision. Hopefully we can build on the performance we had tonight."
Louisville will play host to Arkansas State Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
