LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- After watching from the sidelines with a knee injury last year, University of Louisville sophomore Bing Sun returned with a vengence, leading her team with 13 kills and 10 digs in the three-game sweep of American University in the University of Louisville Labor Day Invitational Volleyball Tournament at Cardinal Arena.
U of L won 30-23, 30-28, 30-24 to win its season opener. In the first match, No. 6-ranked Arizona beat Texas-Arlington 30-21, 27-30, 30-18, 30-27. It was the first match for both squads.
"It is always good to get past those first match jitters," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach. "We had a new setter and new rules with the libero position being added and it went pretty smoothly."
Louisville hit .314 in the first game with 18 kills to American's .161 hitting and 11 kills. In the second game, AU regrouped and kept the game so close that Yelin had to burn both his timeouts to try to swing the momentum. The teams tied at 28 before Louisville reeled off two straight for the win.
The Cardinals had several new faces in the lineup, including starting setter Jennifer Craven from Assumption, 15-year old Ukrainian Lena Ustymenko and University of Kentucky transfer Candace Cogan all seeing action.
Senior Sonja Percan added 11 kills and two service aces for the Cardinals.
American was led by Karla Kucerkova's 16 kills and two blocks.
Louisville plays UT-Arlington at noon and plays Arizona at 7:30.
