LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville men's track and field head coach Gene Weis announced Tuesday that Vernon Stephen will join the Cardinals for the 2002-03 season.
Stephen, a native of Toronto, Canada, specializes in long sprints and middle distance events. This past summer, Stephen placed 10th in the 800m preliminaries at the Canadian Senior Nationals in Edmonton, Alberta. His time of 1:52.83 was just one second off the current U of L 800m record.
"Vernon may be one of the better athletes we have signed in several years, and is definitely one of the best middle distance athletes the University has ever at-tracted," said Weis. "He is still quite new to the sport and we're only just beginning to see what he can do. It goes without saying that we are very excited to have him."
Stephen becomes the eighth signee for the Cardi-nals this summer.
