LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville women's tennis team won all but two pairings in the 6-1 win over Samford University at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center Friday afternoon.
The Cardinals' extra work on doubles paid off as they won No .2 and No. 3 to win the doubles point. Mariana Torres and Kelly Taylor won 8-2 at No. 2 and Kelly Kiehna and Paige Eber paired up to beat Katie Crawford and Kristen Upp 8-6.
"This was a solid win for us. We had good wins across the board including that important doubles point," said Meg Peavy, head coach.
In singles, U of L won all but No .1. Kiehna notched a win at No. 2 with a 7-5, 6-1 effort over Courtney Collins. Julie Penn, who has battled injuries all spring had a decisive 6-0, 6-0 win over Katherine Jayroe.
"To win 12 straight games is not easy to do," said Peavy. "We told her the longer she played the more her injury would nag her. She seemed to take us at our word and polished her opponent off."
Taylor, the Cardinals' lone freshman continued to be a stalwart for U of L with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Crawford. This was Taylor's second win since moving up to No .4 three matches ago.
Eber dropped her first set 6-4 before battling back 6-3 and 10-7 to win at No .5, while Torres has little trouble with Kristen Upp, winning 6-3 ,6-2.
