Winterhaven, FL -- The University of Louisville women's team wilted after a hot, humid, five hour match and fell 6-3 to Rollins.
"Now we know why this team made it to the semi-finals of the NCAA Division II championship," said head coach Meg Peavy. "They are tough!"
The Cardinals managed to squeak by at No. 1 doubles when Melisa San Martin teamed with Kelly Kiehna to beat Vanessa Caddick and Frances Giron 9-8 (7-5).
Louisville, which was playing the old format in the match, (where all three doubles are scored individually), also won two singles matches. Julie Penn at No. 3 singles scored an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Lindsey Soffes. No. 6 singles player Kelly Taylor beat Jill Oppenheim 6-4, 6-2. At No. 4 singles, Mariana Torres took Giron to three sets but fell 4-6, 6-4 ,6-0.
Our team really hustled and played their hardest. We simply had no way of practicing for playing in those heat conditions. It isn't a matter of fitness but a matter of mental toughness to deal wit hso many balls heavily spun back time and time again that wore us down," said Peavy.
