
Volleyball Sweeps Memphis 3-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- Middle blocker Benny Flynn had 11 kills and five blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 30-16, 30-25, 30-27 win over University of Memphis in Conference USA volleyball action in Cardinal Arena Saturday night.
Louisville raises its record to 19-4 and 8-1 in conference play. Memphis, playing without their head coach who was back in Memphis too near her due date to travel, fell to 17-9 and 2-7 in the league.
"We withstood some rallies without leaving our own style. We attacked them with more than one weapon and it eventually wore them down," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach.
Louisville had four players in double digit kills with Bing Sun adding 13, Mercer 11 and Anastasia Zaitseva adding 10.
The Cardinals handled the Tigers with authority in the first game hitting .320. Mercer had four kills on five swings out of the middle with the Cardinals notching three aces. After leading 18-14, U of L went on a 12-1 run for the win.
Memphis rebounded and took a 13-8 lead in game two. Louisville rallied to tie at 15 and took its first lead at 24-23. Memphis could score only twice more before falling 30-25. U of L hit .282 and Flynn had six kills in that game. Sun had four aces and Louisville led blocking 3-0.
In the final set, U of L fell behind 16-11 before uncorking an 8-2 run to tie take its first lead. The Tigers clawed back and stayed within one until the Cardinals scored four of the last five points of the match. A Benny Flynn kill gave the Cardinals point game and match.
In all, U of L outblocked Memphis 10-3 and had seven aces.
Memphis was led by Tiara Gilkey's 11 kills.
