Field Hockey Falls to No. 5 Michigan State 4-2

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The eleventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team lost to No. 5 Michigan 4-2 Sunday at Michigan State.
The Spartans got on the scoreboard six minutes into the game as Judy van Haeringen connected on a penalty corner with assists from Julia Adams and Jenny Sanders. Michelle Carstens scored on a feed from Cynthia Martin to give MSU a 2-0 lead at halftime.
MSU's Annebet Beerman netted what would be the winning goal seven minutes into the second half to make it a 3-0 game.
Louisville's Joanie Frame scored on an assist from Desire' Miller to put the Cards on the scoreboard three minutes later.
Carstens posted her second goal of the game to give the Spartans a 4-1 lead at the 59:59 mark in the game.
Olivia Netzler connected on an assist from Danielle Barr with just under two minutes left in the game to make it a 4-2 game.
Michigan State outshot Louisville 20-15 and held an 11-4 penalty corner advantage. Louisville goalkeeper Janina Perna recorded 11 saves in the game. Michigan State's Christina Kirkaldy collected five saves. The Spartans improve to 13-2 on the season.
U of L (10-5, 4-1 Mid-American Conference) will play host to MAC opponent Ohio Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
