Fort Worth, Texas - TCU connected on eight-of-ten free throws in the final five minutes to defeat the Cardinals 57-50 Sunday afternoon in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Sophomore guard Ebony Shaw led all scorers with 20 points, connecting on four-of-four in that final stretch.
Sara Nord and Amanda Wolke led the Cardinals with nine point apiece. Nord also led the Cards with seven boards for the second consecutive game.
"For the second straight game it came down to not screening out," said head coach Martin Clapp. "It was a one possession game at 53-50 with just over a minute and you don't screen out and that cost you.
"I thought we played excellent defense in the first half and they made some adjustments in the second half and we didn't do a good job of recognizing the hot player."
With 7:34 remaining, TCU's Niki Newton hit one-of-two from the line to knot the score at 45. Nord then hit two free throws to put the Cards up 47-45. With just over five minutes remaining, TCU's Kati Safaritova scored on a putback to move ahead 49-47.
Junior transfer Sabrina Minter then tied the score at 49 for the final time with a layup. The Lady Frogs took the lead for good when Shaw hit to free throws with 4:50 remaining.
The Cardinals broke open a close first half connecting on consecutive three-pointers from Marju Sober and Kim Graham to take a 17-11 at the 6:08 mark of the first half. Louisville ended the first half with a 29-21 lead.
The Louisville defense held TCU without a basket for a six minute stretch. The Cardinals shot 42.0 percent in the first half while holding the Lady Frogs to just 20.0 percent from the field.
The Cardinals will host South Florida on Friday, Jan. 25 in Cardinal Arena at 7:00 p.m.
