
Field Hockey Defeats Ohio State in Penalty Strokes

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Ohio State 4-3 in penalty strokes on Monday at Woody Hayes Athletic Center North Turf Field. The Cardinals are currently ranked No. 10 in the STX/NFCHA Division I Coaches poll, while the Buckeyes are No. 15.
Louisville took an early lead when Olivia Netzler scored on a pass from Danielle Barr with 17:50 remaining in the first half. Ohio State tied the game three minutes later when Marije van Nouhuys netted an unassisted goal. The Buckeyes added another goal two minutes later when Vanessa Immordino connected on a feed from Mariana Solorzano to make the score 2-1. Ohio State took a 3-1 lead when Solarzano converted on a penalty corner with 6:11 left to play in the half.
Seven minutes into the second half, Louisville's Joanie Frame pulle dthe Cards within one when she connected on a pass from Netzler to make the score 3-2. Netzler recorded her second goal of the game, tying the score at 3-3 with 15:42 remaining in regulation.
The Buckeyes had two key opportunities in the first overtime when Lorena Margni took two penalty strokes, but Louisville goalkeeper Christy Hershey came up with two big saves to keep the Cards in the game. With the score still knotted at three after the first overtime period, the teams went to a set of five penalty strokes. Casey Lehman, Frame, Barr and Sarah Baum converted four strokes to OSU's three to seal the 4-3 win.
Netzler finished the game with two goals and an assist. Hershey recorded11 saves and allowed three goals in 85 minutes played.
The Buckeyes' goalkeeper Allison Blanton had three stops for OSU and allowed three goals in 85 minutes played. Ohio State falls to 4-1 on the season.
U of L (5-1) will open Mid-American Conference play at Ball State on Friday at 4 p.m. and at Central Michigan on Sunday at 11 a.m.
NOTES: - This marks the first time Louisville has defeated Ohio State. (Buckeyes now lead series 10-1)
- After starting the season with a 1-0 loss to No. 4 Michigan, Louisville is currently on a 5 game winning streak.
