Women's Golf Finishes Third at C-USA Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Senior Katherine Mowat fell just four strokes shy of repeating as the Conference USA women's golf champion. She shot a 73, 76, 75 (224) to finish fourth at the par 72, 5979-yard Inverness Country Club.

"She kept herself in a position to win and she scrambled when she had to, but some key putts did not fall for her," said Kelly Meyers, U of L head coach. "It is hard to go in as the defending champion and repeat. She was hitting the ball very well but just fell short."

Memphis came back from a two-round, six-shot deficit to claim the title over favorite South Florida by two strokes. The Tigers duplicated their score of 296 from Saturday, shooting a 904 total. The Bulls shot a final round 304 to finish the Championship with 906. Louisville shot a 306 on the final round to finish third at 923. The Cardinals had been picked to finish third.

"Memphis did a great job to upset favored South Florida," said Meyers. "You could just tell by the fire in their eyes."

Meaghan Francella (79-71-71/221) of Memphis captured the Individual title by a stroke after firing a final round one-under par 71 for a 221 total. The freshman jumped past second-round leader, Kelly Martin (74-73-75/222) of South Florida who shot a final round 75 to take second place.

Besides winning the individual title, Francella earned Freshman of the Year honors and was named to the All-Tournament and All-Conference Teams. Mowat earned both All-Conference and All-Tournament honors. Teammate Cindy Pasechnik was also named to the All-Conference team.

Louisville's Morgan Hapney shot a 78, 77, 76 (231) to finish ninth. She was followed by Pasechnik's 15th finish with a 78, 82, 76 (236). Alison Wright and Jessica Kell carded 237 and 239 good for 16th and 21st respectively.
