NCAA Women's Golf East Regional Halted Due to Weather

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Due to inclement weather, seven teams, including the University of Louisville, were unable to complete play at the 2001 NCAA Women's Golf East Regional Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Play was stopped at 3:05 p.m. due to thunder, lightning and torrential rain. Play resumed at 5:08 p.m., but was halted again due to thunder and lightning. At that time, officials determined that the tournament was complete and those seven teams tied for 15th place and the individuals who did not finish tied for 79th place.

Top-ranked Duke won the event with an 871 (+7), eight strokes ahead of second-place Auburn. Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn won medalist honors with a 7-under 209, while teammate Candy Hannemann finished second at 212 (-4).

Louisville sophomore Cindy Pasechnik and freshman Alison Wright were the only two Cardinals who completed play. Pasechnik finished tied for 63rd with a 240 (+24), while Wright battled a sore back to place 75th with a 246 (+30).

Freshmen Morgan Hapney and Jessica Kell and senior Katherine Mowat did not finish their rounds.

"We were fighting to move up in the standings, and we would have obviously finished higher than our number 17 seed," said U of L head coach Kelly Meyers. "I am really proud of this team and for what they have accomplished. We will just use this success to build upon for next season."
